Topic: "Designing scalable application: from umbrella project to distributed system"

Elixir/Erlang OTP abstractions enforce developers to split programs into independent parts. While “gen_servers” encapsulate parts of business logic on micro-level, “applications” present a more general (“domain”) part of the system. Complex programs written in Elixir are always a collection of communicating OTP applications. The main question appeared while developing such programs is how to split the complex system into separate parts. But the more important problem is how to organize communication between them. My talk will be mostly about designing of flexible interfaces between applications. You will see how they may be changed while scaling from simple umbrella project to distributed system.

Topic: "Scriptless Application with Phoenix"

Modern web applications are less like web and more like applications, and JavaScript ceases to be a scenario language on the page. What if applications could be responsive and fast without tons of JavaScript? What if applications could be totally rendered on the server, and user doesn’t notice it? What if server’s part of application it is still part of the application, not just API? Modern JavaScript literally screams this can’t be achieved. I don’t believe it and will try to explain incompleteness of totalitarianism and monarchy of JavaScript. And Elixir with Phoenix in this way is suitable. Viva la server programming, friends!

Elixir v1.7.0-rc.0 Released

Development team ask community to try out new release
17 July 2018   81

Elixir team rolled out zero release candidate for version 1.7.0.

Hi everyone,

We have just released v1.7.0-rc.0.

Please give it a try! You can either compile the v1.7 branch from source OR use the precompiled files, as described in our install page 11.

Note that you will need {:ex_doc, "~> 0.19-rc"}if you want to generate docs using the release candidate.

Happy coding!

Currently Elixir supports two metadata keys: :deprecated and :since. Other keys will be added in the future.

To access the new documentation, developers should use Code.fetch_docs/1. The old documentation format is no longer available and the old Code.get_docs/1 function will return nil accordingly.

Tools like IEx and ExDoc have been updated to leverage the new format and show relevant metadata to users
